Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal, which was established in 1973. It is granted the status of a World Heritage Site in 1984. This national park has covered an area of 952.63 km2 (367.81 sq mi). It is located in the subtropical Inner Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal in the districts of Nawalparasi, Parsa, Chitwan and Makwanpur. In altitude it ranges from about 100 m (330 ft) in the river valleys to 815 m (2,674 ft) in the Churia Hills.

The Narayani-Rapti river system serves as a natural barrier separating human settlements from the protected area in the north and west. To the east lies Parsa National Park, while Valmiki National Park in India borders it to the south. Together, these areas form a continuous protected region of 2,075 km², known as the Chitwan-Parsa-Valmiki Tiger Conservation Unit (TCU), which spans a total of 3,549 km² of alluvial grasslands and subtropical moist deciduous forests.
