Mardi Himal Trek – A Hidden Gem in the Annapurna Region
Mardi Himal BC Trek (4,500m) is one of the newest and most captivating trekking routes in Nepal. Nestled in the Annapurna Sanctuary, this trek is quickly gaining popularity among travelers seeking a serene alternative to the more crowded Annapurna Circuit or Annapurna Base Camp treks. The journey rewards trekkers with stunning views of Mardi Himal (5,587m) and the surrounding snow-capped giants such as Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Machhapuchhre (6,997m), and Gangapurna (7,454m).
The trail takes you through winding paths surrounded by dense rhododendron forests, where the landscape gradually opens up to reveal breathtaking mountain vistas. The forests along the route are home to a variety of wildlife, including Himalayan Thar, langurs, and colorful birds like Danphe and Kalij. Trekkers often appreciate the peaceful and uncrowded atmosphere, making Mardi Himal Trek a perfect choice for those seeking both adventure and tranquility.
One of the unique features of this trek is the rapid ascent to altitudes above 4,000 meters, offering spectacular high-mountain views in a relatively short period. Along the way, tea houses provide comfortable accommodation and meals, making it accessible for trekkers with varying levels of experience and fitness. The trail includes river crossings, gentle hills, and forest walks, all culminating in panoramic views from Badal Danda, where you can admire Mardi Himal, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre.
The trek typically begins in Kathmandu, where trekkers can explore cultural and historical landmarks before flying to Pokhara. From Pokhara, a short drive takes you to Kande, the starting point of the trek. The route continues through Australian Camp, Pothana, and Pitam Durali, before heading toward Low Camp, Forest Camp, and Rest Camp. Trekkers then reach High Camp and the Mardi Himal Base Camp, after which the descent leads to Siding. From Siding, a shared jeep returns you to Pokhara, where you can enjoy a relaxing boat ride on Phewa Lake and explore the city before heading back to Kathmandu.
The Mardi Himal Trek offers a perfect combination of pristine nature, majestic mountain scenery, and a chance to witness Nepal’s wildlife and forest ecosystems up close, a truly unforgettable experience for any trekking enthusiast.
Experience the magic of the Himalayas through stunning visuals of snow-capped peaks, vibrant rhododendron forests, and serene mountain trails. Capture the sunrise over Annapurna and Machhapuchhare, local village life, and the breathtaking Mardi Base Camp panorama. Basic Information for Mardi Himal Trek
1. Difficulty Level
The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderately challenging, suitable for trekkers with a basic level of fitness. Trails can be steep and uneven, requiring several hours of walking each day. Some prior hiking experience is helpful, but beginners can still complete it with preparation.
2. Altitude & Health
The trek reaches a maximum altitude of about 4,500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp. Altitude sickness can occur if you ascend too quickly. To stay safe, climb gradually, drink plenty of water, and know the warning signs such as headaches, dizziness, or nausea.
3. Best Time to Trek
The ideal trekking seasons are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and the best views of the Annapurna range. Winter brings snow and freezing temperatures, while the monsoon season can make trails muddy and slippery.
4. Permits Required
All foreign trekkers need two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS Card. These can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara through a trekking agency or at the official permit offices. Carry them at all times, as checkpoints will verify them along the route.
5. Starting Point & Transport
Most trekkers travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus (7–8 hours) or domestic flight (25 minutes). The trek usually starts from Kande or Phedi, which are about an hour’s drive from Pokhara.
6. Accommodation & Food
Tea houses along the route offer basic rooms with shared bathrooms. Meals include Nepali staples like dal bhat, noodles, soups, and pancakes. Hot showers and charging facilities are available in some places for an extra fee.
7. Money & Expenses
Bring enough cash in Nepalese Rupees before leaving Pokhara, as there are no ATMs on the trail.
8. Weather & Packing
Mountain weather can change suddenly. Pack warm clothes, a rain jacket, trekking boots, gloves, sun protection, and a refillable water bottle. A sleeping bag can be useful in colder months.
9. Safety & Insurance
Ensure your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation. Keep emergency contacts handy, follow your guide’s advice, and trek responsibly. Respect local culture, greet people with “Namaste,” and avoid littering.
